The history of fashion has been widely studied.Research into rural dress has,on the other hand, been so little pursued that an original and synoptic monograph such as this must have the status of a pioneer work.As Mr Donald King (Keeper of the Department of Textiles in the Victoria & Albert Museum [V & A]) writes in his Foreword,'this is to a remarkable degree an original and independent work, based on many years of personal study and reflection. There can be few students of costume who will fail to find here many unfamiliar facts and ideas. The carefully chosen illustrations, which form an indispensable adjunct to the text, have been ably redrawn by Miss Hamilton Hill from many original sources.' Rural costume is not only unfamiliar,it is no less rich and varied than aristocratic dress. It could be extravagantly elaborate and, though it evolved more slowly,it was apt to incorporate features of various periods in new and original ensembles. Moreover, while the costume of the upper and middle classes always tended to be international, rural costume was intensely regional, varying widely from country to country and even village to village.Today, save as a self-conscious archaism or as an attraction for tourists, traditional rural costume has almost died out in Europe; and this is an additional reason for the timely appearance of the present work.If the costumes of Holland,Southern Germany and Switzerland do have a certain general familiarity, those further afield are virtually unknown. An additional merit of this book is that it ranges far beyond the relatively well recorded areas to cover the whole of Western Europe, including in its scope such obscure aspects of its subject as the costumes of the Scottish fishwives,of the bedeswomen of Castle Rising in Norfolk, and of the Amish sect in Pennsylvania.Individual sections of the work dealing with head-dresses and with footwear, and with the sumptuary laws which regulated dress, will be particularly valuable to the student of costume.
