Matthiessen and Cheney were lovers and partners. Cheney died in 1945 from mesenteric thrombosis. Matthiessen died by suicide in 1950 in the midst of the Red Scare stating in a suicide note that he was "a Christian and a Socialist." They were both members of Skull & Bones.
