Four issues of the historical journal, published monthly from 1870 to 1918, and founded by Russian historian and journalist Mikhail Semevskii who was its first editor from its inception until 1892. The main aspiration of the journal was following Russian history beginning with the reign of Peter the First (1672 - 1725), but it also published research and documents from earlier periods. The various issues contained historical materials, autobiographies, memoirs, and letters of cultural, political, and public figures as well as original works by new and established authors and poets.
