About This Item

(London, Robert Hale, 1961). 8vo; original blue boards; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 188, incl. index; map; monochrome photographic plates. Dustwrapper somewhat edgeworn; endpapers and prelims. foxed, sporadic light foxing elsewhere; remnant of bookseller's sticker on front free endpaper. Good condition. "Timbuctu, the Bussa Rapids, Mumbo Jumbo; Woolli and Walli, and old Jillifree … these were some of the names that impelled Richard Owen to set out on a journey in the tracks of Mungo Park, Richard Lander and other explorers whose enterprise, courage and fortitude wrote across Africa a veritable saga - the Saga of the Niger. He travelled alone with a rucksack, tent and rifle, living off the country like the explorers and covering considerable distances on foot and by canoe. In one respect at least he outdid even the old pathfinders themselves, for he is the first man to have made the complete journey from the mouth of the Gambia to the mouth of the Niger." .
