SAGE Publications Ltd, 2011. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. This reference will be useful to a wide audience in that it gathers together clear and purposeful writings relevant to four areas of educational psychology: human development; curriculum, instruction, and learning; motivation; and research design, measurement and statistics, and evaluation. Editor Salkind (psychology and research in education, U. of Kansas) has had a long career in the field (more than 30 years) and is the author or editor of several college-level texts. He provides an introductory essay discussing the four main themes and indicating that the aim of the reference is to familiarize readers with scholarship pertaining to what happens when children and adults participate in educational activities, in any venue. Five volumes contain 95 previously published articles, presented in uniform, legible type (rather than in facsimile). All are reprints from journals or annuals published by SAGE Publications. Sources include: Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Journal of Family Issues, International Journal of Behavioral Development, American Educational Research Journal, Educational Researcher, Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and the list goes on. The earliest article is from 1951 ("Tests as Research Instruments," by Robert L. Thorndike), and there's one other article from that decade; the most recent is from 2006 ("The Role of Measurement Error in Familiar Statistics," by Malcolm James Ree and Thomas R. Carretta). At casual glance the decades seem about equally represented after the 1950s. Inexplicably, the set contains no indexing whatsoever. (2011 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
