A Sailor's Odyssey is the autobiography of one of the most celebrated of British admirals--Andrew Cunningham, Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope. It is known as one of the best naval autobiographies ever written; it was a best-seller when first published in 1951, but early copies are hard to find. This is a 1951 reprint.

Cunningham was a Dublin-born Scot who fought in both world wars. His brightest hour came in WWII, when he commanded the Mediterranean Fleet. His remarkable victory at the Battle of Matapan virtually eliminated the Italian battle fleet at a stroke, and remains one of the most amazing actions in naval history. Cunningham's bravery was equally valuable during the evacuation of Crete, and in the difficult operations in the Mediterranean in which he gained the upper hand over the Axis powers. In this autobiography, Cunningham explains how he dealt with the French fleet at Alexandria after the fall of France. He provides a revealing account of the Battle of Calabria, the crippling of the Italian fleet at Taranto, and tells how the Navy supported the Army in North Africa and brought the convoys through to save Malta.

715 pages, including 16 maps and 46 photos. The front endpaper of this copy has an inscription, to William B Gibson from Isabel Ramsay, dated 1952. No jacket. And the cover needs cleaning—you can do it yourself with Absorene, or have a printer or binder do it. Aside from darkening of the paper, the inside is perfect.
