About This Item
Constable, London., 1924. First edition. Octavo. pp lxiv, 114, [ii] (adverts).Signed on the front free endpaper by four of the people involved in the 1932 Lewis Casson production of the play at the King's Theatre: Sybil Thorndyke, Lewis Casson, Christopher T. Casson and Michael Martin-Harvey. Interestingly, the latter two were both sons of Shavian actors.Endpapers partially tanned. Edges spotted. Pasted onto the half-title page is a photograph of Sybil Thorndyke in the role of Saint Joan, and pasted onto the rear free endpaper is the cast list from the 1932 production. Very good. No dustwrapper.
Synopsis
One of Shaw's most unusual and enduringly popular plays. With SAINT JOAN (1923) Shaw reached the height of his fame and Joan is one of his finest creations; forceful, vital, and rebelling against the values that surround her. The play distils Shaw's views on the subjects of politics, religion and creative evolution.

On Oct 16 2010, ElectricEel said:
As usual, Shaw works very hard at shocking the reader/viewer. He claims that the first trial, at which Joan was convicted, was more than fair, while the postumous trial, at which she was rehabilitated, was a kangaroo court. But maybe he's right. He also makes it clear that we're all willing to defend Joan now that she's been dead a few hundred years, but that if she were to reappear, we modern liberals would be the first to join the lynch mob.
