Presentation inscription on front free endpaper reads "To Rudolph from Norma". First American edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Early Sabatini hero rescues damsel in distress. An older protagonist than Sabatini's norm, Martin Marie Rigobert de Garnache is sent by the Queen Regent in France to rescue a damsel in distress and bring her under the Queen's protection. Martin sees women as the source of many of life's woes, but falls in love with the stubborn, brave Valérie nonetheless.
An early Sabatini, this was originally published in 1909 in England, and published for the first time in America in 1924 after the breakout success of Captain Blood in 1922 exposed American readers to Sabatini's rollicking prose.
