About This Item

Salt Lake City: Western Printing Company, 1930. First Edition. 178pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Green grained buckram with a blind stamped pioneer motif and the title in a gilt panel on the front board. Very good. Gentle bumping to the corners. Lacks the dust jacket. This is the first book length work by Charles Kelly (1889-1971), who is one of the greatest western historians. This work focuses on those that tried to cross the inhospitable desert to the west of Salt Lake City, on the way to California. Map endsheets and pastedowns. An excellent work.

A genuinely important and valuable contribution to the history of the trail. Essential to both the student and collector. Among the notable overland parties which her receive careful study and whose routes are pinned to the map with geographical accuracy are those of Smith, Hastings, Bartleson, Fremont, Russell, Harlan and Donner. - Eberstadt 105:170. Howes K59. Flake/Draper 4565.
