Johannesburg, South Africa: Southern Book Publishers, 1990. 151 pp. Gray boards lettered in white on the spine; endpaper maps; illustrated with colour plates, black and white photographs and diagrams. Light wear on the corners of the dustjacket; no interior markings. HMS Birkenhead was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked in February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point. The Chapters are: A Tradition Is Born; Discovering a Legend; Seeking for More Knowledge; Getting Closer; Birkenhead Visited; Getting Ready to Work; A Time of Strife; The Salvage Begins; Strife Vulcan and Wine; Birkenhead Revisited; Reconstructing the Disaster; and The Third Expedition; followed by an epilogue, Birkenhead Anecdotes and an appendix: HMS Birkenhead Artefact Register in Grid Sequence.. Comments: The story of the under-sea search for the wreck of HMS Birkenhead, lost off the South African coast in 1852, and the historic artefacts recovered. The ship was one of the first iron-hulled warships powered by steam and sail. The actions of the Captain and his crew saving many of the women on board created the "women and children first" principle for later sinkings; many of the crew and soldiers subsequently killed by shark attacks. .
