One of thirty-five numbered copies on Japon vellum, specially bound, from a total edition of 330. Linton is credited on the half-title as editor and illustrator, but he of course was the composer of the poems as well. Scarce in this issue. NCBEL III:533.

London: Elliot Stock, 1898. A superb example of a vellucent binding. Cedric Chivers (1853 -1929) of Bath revived the technique of painting under vellum. Chivers would execute his paintings on paper which was covered with a translucent skin to form the binding, The covers were then lightly tooled with gold. It is rare to find such a finely preserved fine binding. Signed by Chivers. In 'Days and Hours in a Garden', 19th century Scotish artist and writier, Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825 -1916) takes us through the months of the year, the cherry blossoms, the rooks, the wild ivy etc. etc., reminiscent of a modest walled-garden 'Walden' by Thoreau. This is a very lovely small book of poetry by Dante Gabriel Rossetti with illustrations by Paul Woodroffe. It was published by David McKay, Philadelphia, and dates to circa 1916. This appears to be a special binding, more luxurious than the softcover binding that McKay published, because this one has covers of thick rose-colored suede leather with the title and author impressed deeply into the suede on the front cover and spine. The front and back have double-page illustrations by Paul Woodroffe, as shown, and the title page has a lovely design as well as a facing illustration; there are 3 other illustrations among the 27 pages. The illustrations are in the Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau style. The page edges are gilt, as shown, and there is a pink ribbon bookmark sewn in. A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes.
