Pocket English translation of twelve stories by Alexander Kuprin, part of The International Library series issued jointly by Stanley Paul in London and David McKay in Philadelphia. In the preface, J.A.T. Lloyd argues that Kuprin's stories provide "on a small scale the very essence of that Russian realism which the great writers of the last century gave on a great scale." In addition to the title story, the collection includes "A Sentimental Romance," "The Army Ensign," "Autumn Flowers," "Emerald," "Happiness," "How I Became an Actor," "Allez!," "Black Fog," "The Murderer," "Measles," and "The Jewess." Published from 1923 to 1928, the International Library series included a number of popular English translations from the Russian, among them works by Anton Chekhov and Dmitry Grigorovich.
