About This Item

New York: Viking, 1989. Near fine in like dust jacket. Signed first US edition of this controversial favorite, a blending of magical realism and immigrant experience so powerful that some critics called for the author's death. A Booker Prize finalist, the literary quality of THE SATANIC VERSES is often overshadowed by the international controversy, book burnings, and assassination attempts that followed in its wake. Salman Rushdie has a bounty on his head even today. 9'' x 6.5''. Original black cloth-backed boards with gilt lettering to spine. Original color pictorial jacket with gilt lettering, unclipped ($19.95). Fore-edge machine deckle. 548 pages. Signed by Rushdie to title page. Small owner's name to front pastedown. Jacket with mild edgewear, slight toning to flaps, tiny spot of soil to verso. Binding spine ends mildly bumped. Sharp.

Synopsis

Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses tells the tale of a hijacked jetliner that explodes above the English Channel. Through the falling debris, two figures, Gibreel Farishta, the biggest star in India, and Saladin Chamcha, an expatriate returning from his first visit to Bombay in fifteen years, plummet from the sky, washing up on the snow-covered sands of an English beach, and proceed through a series of metamorphoses, dreams, and revelations. Whitbread Award for Best Novel (1988)

great book. i really appreciate the fluidity of rushdie's style. i read this with a group, and the major complaints from others in the group were the surreal quality and a basic ignorance of the information related to the british-indian experience. there's more to be said, but the saying of it would not do the book justice. if you're not familiar with british-indian relations and post-colonialism, get over it and check this book out.
