Oxford: At the Theater [Theatre Press], 1674. Full Leather. Good binding. Octavo. [16], 413, [1 (errata)], [2 (blank)] pp. lacking frontis. First edition. In contemporary calf with title label on the spine and marbled textblock edges. Leather is dry and with 'craqueleur'; all four corner have been repaired with leather, likely a 19th century repair; binding is slightly bowed; hinges weak but holding; ex-library copy with early bookplate, notations in pencil and stamp; contents lightly toned, but clean; textblock solid. While this copy is lacking the frontipiece, the imprimatur leaf is present. Despite its faults, this remains an attractive copy in a contemporary binding. Madan describes the work as "[a]n invective against the special attractions which lure men to Rome, such as the worship of the Virgin, Indulgences and Pardons, the miraculous power of relics, and the legends of saints. These are ridiculed, and compared to the enchantments of the Witch of Endor, who brought up Samuel to speak with Saul."
