Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and…

London: George Newnes, Limited, 1908. First Illustrated edition. Paperback. This is the first illustrated edition of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. He would later make deprecating comments about the work. In his 1930 autobiography he wrote, "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it [Savrola]." However, his mixed feelings about his only novel did not keep Churchill from writing a foreword to a new edition in 1956, in which he said: "The preface to the first edition in 1900 submitted the book 'with considerable trepidation to the judgment or the clemency of the public.' The intervening fifty-five years have somewhat dulled though certainly not changed my sentiments on this point." Irrespective of Churchill's feelings about his book and his limitations as a novelist, this novel certainly provides insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill.
This very early paperback reprint was issued as part of publisher George Newnes' "Sixpenny Novels Illustrated" series. The front cover bears a blue printed illustration of Savrola and Lucille. Two full-page illustrated interior plates on coated paper - at the frontispiece and opposite p.30 - make this the "first illustrated" edition. As a 100 year old paperback, it is obviously quite scarce, most often seen with significant wear, damage, and losses. Offered here is a typical example, priced commensurate with condition. The text is clean and complete with no spotting and no inscriptions, but age-toned as is inevitable. The spine is still mostly intact and legible, with loss only to the "S" in "SAVROLA". The front cover is present, but detached and with some chipping to the edges. The rear cover is detached and missing. Protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve.

Description:
London: Beacon Books (Odhams Press Ltd.), 1957. Paperback. This is the second paperback edition of Churchill's third published book and only novel (the first paperback edition being published 49 years earlier in 1908). Condition is very good for a paperback of this vintage. The binding is square and tight. The illustrated covers are bright and clean, showing only light wear at the hinges and extremities. We note no vertical creasing to the spine, indicating that this copy is unread. The contents are inevitably age-toned, but otherwise fine with no spotting or previous ownership marks. When Savrola was first published in February 1900, a very young Churchill was exuberant. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. His Tale of the Revolution in Laurania is a melodramatic tale of political intrigue in a fictional Mediterranean state. He later made deprecating comments about his novel and it is perhaps instructive…

It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People.
