About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1954. First U.K. Edition. 12mo (18cm). Blue cloth hardcover, titles stamped in orange on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 220pp. Tight, Very Good or better copy in lightly rubbed dustwrapper, unclipped (priced 12s. 6d. on lower front flap); Very Good.
Engstrand's uncommon last novel, a rather sordid tale of sexual obsession set among laborers in an Iowa tree-trimming business. Engstrand's 1947 novel of suppressed homosexuality, The Sling and the Arrow, had been well-received despite its controversial subject matter; but The Scattered Seed received universally bad reviews, and Engstrand committed suicide not long after its publication, drowning himself in front of a crowd of observers in MacArthur Lake in downtown Los Angeles.
