First Edition. Oblong folio (11 1/4 x 17 inches; 288 x 430 mm). With 18 large hand-colored aquatints, printed on white wove paper, heightened with gum arabic, bound together on stubs. Without title-page as issued. Each of the illustrations feature scenes of horses and carriages and their passengers on the road. Nos 1-4, 6 and 11 engraved by R.G. Reeve after Newhouse. Each image in vignette and marked in margin, C.B. Newhouse, del (those by Reeve so identified), and McLean's imprint and date.
Each of the illustrations are captioned as follows: 1) The Disappointment, or Retreat in a Shower. 2] A Frost. 3] Repose in the Mail. 4] An Alarming Reason - Were Run away with and No Mistake. 5] A Faithfull Ally. 6] A Signal of Distress, or the Xmas Visitor. 7] Just in time. 8] A Lazy Horsekeeper for the Mail. 9] An Affair of the moment. 10] A Lesson for the Horsekeeper. 11] An Insubordinate Gate Keeper. 12] A Passing Remark. 13] Accidents will happen to the best Appointed Coaches. 14] A Flood Tide - Ship a Hoy !!! 15] A Practical Lesson. 16] An Indiscreet Artist. 17] An Accommodating Fare or Gallantry before Comfort - Go outside with pleasure to accommodate a Lady. 18] A Race Team.
Full original green cloth. Front board tooled in gilt. Title in gilt on front board. Some glue staining to endpapers. Front board with some minor discoloration to top edge near spine. Final illustration with a bit of spotting. Overall an about fine set of beautiful, brightly colored illustrations.
C.B. Newhouse, artist and traveler, illustrated his own Scenes on the Road (1834-1835), with eighteen aquatints, and Roadster's Album (1845), with seventeen aquatints (Abbey, Life, 406 and 407 and Tooley 345 and 346, respectively).
