1694. DRYDEN, John. LOVE TRIUMPHANT; or, Nature will Prevail. A Tragi-Comedy. As it is acted at the Theatre Royal, by Their Majesties Servants. Written by Mr. Dryden. London: Jacob Tonson, 1694. First edition. 4to. Collation: A4; a2; B-L4; M2; this copy lacks A1, the half-title page; 47 leaves. Modern paper boards, title printed in black to spine. Ex library; a small, very discreet, embossed stamp to t.p. and two ink stamps on the verso. The first and second leaves are moderately soiled; the title-page has a paper repair along the inner margin with some type loss; in the phrase "By Their Majesties Servants," the word "by" is missing; there is another small repair at the upper, fore-corner. Occasional, very light foxing to text leaves. The binding is heavily soiled. This is a good copy.

London: Jacob Tonson, 1694. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Small 4to. Pp. (12); 82; (2). Verso of half-title page features an advertisement for "The Works of Mr. John Dryden in Four Volumes," also published by Tonson. Four-page dedication (to the Earl of Salisbury) follows the title page. Play is complete with only minor foxing throughout. No tears or wormholes, but bottom corner of last leaf shows slight wear. Else Very Good. Bound early 20th C. by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Binding Fine. The remarkable condition of the interior, devoid of wormholes and egregious foxing, is unusual and is thus worthy of the elegant binding in which it is contained. This is Dryden's final play, which is noted for the inclusion of a song by Congreve. Indeed, Dryden foresook the stage for the purpose of undertaking his translation of Virgil. A contemporary reference to the reception of this play can be found in "The Plays and Poems of Shakespeare," (1790, vol. I pt. II, p. 141)wherein a citation in a letter… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
