FIRST EDITION 1814, 12mo, approximately 170 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, pages: [3] 4-24, [25]-232, a printers error numbering page 20, 24, the jump in pagination is the same in all copies, nothing is missing, bound in the original publisher's drab boards, modern printed paper label to spine, gatherings untrimmed and trimmed. Boards slightly worn at corners, armorial bookplate of William Middleton of Crowfield Hall Suffolk on front pastedown, front endpaper partly cracked, endpapers and title page slightly foxed and slightly spotted, pronounced horizontal wrinkle to last few pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. The work is a history of the pleasures of dining and drinking beginning with classical times to the 18th century, dwelling particularly on France and then England but also reviewing customs in Russia, Italy and Germany. He names many writers on cookery throughout the period covered. Oxford, English Cookery Books, page 142; Bitting, Gastronomic Bibliography, page 555, listing only the second edition which was entitled: Gastronomy: or, the School for Good Living (1822); not in Cagle. François Massialot was a 17th-century French chef who wrote a number of cookbooks in addition to his well-known meals for French royalty. One of his famous cookbooks was 'Nouvelle Instruction pour Les Confitures' which was a collection of recipes for jams, jellies, fruit dishes, and liqueurs and wines.
This 1740 printing of 'Confitures' was published the same year as Massialot's death and features a charming folding engraving of a table setting at the end.

In 16th-century Florence, there was a rise a style of literature that focused heavily on political satire. One such work was 'Company of the Lesina Dialogues'. This work of unknown authorship describes a group of travelers on the way to Lesina and their conversations. It covers a wide variety of topics including food and recipes, as well as money and finance – things the group sought upon arriving at their destination.

While there are no exact connections between the two, the parallels between 'Lesina' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' are evident. Fictional travelers discussing life on their way to a destination.

This edition was published in Orvieto, Italy in 1598. A unique 16th-century work published in a small Italian town.
