Author was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in the first part of the twentieth century, two years after the stock market crash and grew up in the Adirondacks before and during the Second World War. Gelb's candor in her search for the truth about her family history brings this story to life. It's not that the family and their secrets are so unusual but rather Gelb's honesty creates a compelling memoir as she recreates her relationship with each family member and her objectivity in events and family issues past is impressive.
