A handsome first edition/first printing in Fine condition SIGNED directly on the title page by John Fowles, the author of The French Lieutenant's Woman. Fine dustjacket, publisher clipped and £6.95 price sticker above original clipped price; John Fowles was convinced that Harold Pinter was the only playwright who could overcome some of the aspects of his novel that would prove difficult to the screenwriter. He said of Pinter that he had the gift for "reducing the long and complex without distortion. " (from the cover) The novel is the basis for the 1981 film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons .
