Original green cloth, gilt vignette of fish to upper board, gilt lettering to spine; pp. xvi + 550, colour frontispiece, colour map, 103 plates, many in colour, numerous text illsutrations; a little rubbing to binding, otherwise very good. Second edition. An important and comprehensive book of icthyology by the man who famously identified the coelacanth as a living species, 65 million years after it was supposed to have become extinct. A full description of that remarkable fish is included in this work. Smith's wife Margaret wqas responsible for over 600 of the illustrations.
