About This Item

UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn - ex-public library.VG.No owner inscrptn, but a blue ink,"WITHDRAWN FROM PLYMOUTH LIBRARY SERVICES" rectangular stamp to ffe,and a blue+white MOUNT WISE NAVAL HISTORY LIBRARY - Plymouth Public Libraries bookplate pasted to front pastedown.Just above the bookplate,is a typewritten pasted paper label indicating that the book is part of a collection bequeathed to the R.N. Port Library, DEVONPORT,by Lieut.Col. R.St.J.Gillespie,C.I.E,OBE,in November 1952.Probably,due to the bequest, title page and following preface page are both stamped with impressed 'PRESENTATION COPY' to their respective top edges right-hand corners.Publisher's original, dark blue cloth bds with residual, oxidised gilt letters impressed to upper bd,similar residual, but barely discernible gilt stamped letters to spine/backstrip,along with white tippex numerical, library notation (910.4) to foot of same, with inevitable shelf-wear to edges and bumped corners and some slight rubbing to same. Both head+foot of spine/ backstrip bumped with reciprocal creasing, and a small nick/fray to top edge of rear bd.Top edge darkened and dust-soiled, fore-edges slightly aged/tanned but to a lesser degree and with some minimal, sporadic spotting/foxing.Contents generally bright and clean with some minimal, sporadic foxing/spotting throughout the body of the text, most affecting the prelims and remainder to page edges/borders.No dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, though the book is lightly cocked. The only further library indications include library stamp+ink notation to recto of title-page,and the residue of the removal of library's adhesive bar-code (done in my presence) from rear pastedown. UK,8vo HB,minus issued(?) dw/dj,1st edn,v-ixpp+3-253pp [paginated] includes preface, contents+illus lists/tables,14 sections/chapters, 23 separate b/w contemporary illus/ photographs etc. interspersed throughout the text and book, and an index.Plus,[unpaginated] blank,half-title+title pages,b/w frntis and blank to rear.
The theme of this book is adventure: adventure by sea in all kinds of ships by all sorts of seamen during the period of the last two hundred and fifty years (then 1924).Not a story, not an incident here to be found comes under the heading of fiction; on the contrary, every word is solid history,in some cases obtained first-hand.There is nothing included that will not stand the test of historical accuracy. These events really did happen.
