Travel Book Club, London, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Forewords by C. E. Tyndale-Biscoe and David MacDonald; Schary made a 12-year cycle of three journeys to Tibet between 1912 and 1924 in search of the Mahatmas whom he believed dwelt somewhere in the heights of the Himalayas. He reached Leh, Ladakh in 1915 & onward to Tunga La pass but exhaustion & altitude sickness forced him to turn back . His second journey in 1918 was more successful travelling as a begger (travel to Tibet was forbidden at the time) to Hanle and Gartok & then through Western Tibet & the valley of the Tsangpo river & down to Shigatse, then back to India through Gyantse and Sikkim. His third attempt to enter Tibet was thwarted when he was recognised at the Residency Office as the man who had illegally entered Tibet in 1918 against the permission of that office, 8 page publisher catalogue to rear. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 312 + 8 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing front/rear pages, but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed other than a couple of pages. Green titles spine. illustrated by b/w. maps & photo's. (one fold-out facsimile).
