Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1866. Good/No DJ. 12mo = 7-9". Maroon cloth over hard covers, gilt lettering on spine, blind-stamped leaf decorations. Covers are very faded especially along edges and spine. Front endpapers have a large damp stain, bleeds to frontispiece and title page but is light. Dampstain runs from page 48-65, pages are generally clean and well-preserved, high quality thick-stock paper, some foxing here and there. Page edges browned, interior of pages quite bright for their age. Previous owner's name in ink on front free endpaper. Binding is strong. Thirteen illustrated plates, frontispiece of author with signature, tissue guard present, second plate consists of seven portraits of war correspondents from various newspapers, tissue guard present, other illustrations are lacking tissue guard, one plate is loose. Author was a journalist for The Tribune, this is a detailed account of his experiences during the Civil War.
