William Heinemann Ltd., London, 1929. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 436 pages (complete). A much owned, lazily stored copy. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate for Ivor Jones, a legendary theatre critic for "The Cape Times". The frontispage is signed by him. The book is aged, shabby, but resolute. The boards have wear, scuffing, marks from storage, shelving, handling. They are steady, stoic. The contents are genially aging. The papertrims have foxing, as do the contents. However, the pages are benign, competent, clean, clear of further blemish or annotation. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

Description:
William Heinemann Ltd, London 1929 Hardcover with tinted top edges, lacking jacket Previous owners' names to front endpaper. Some spotting to page edges. Book in GOOD condition Charles Cochran was a showman of the old school. He booked theatres, hired showgirls, arranged prize-fights, toured shows, started an acting school, tried becoming a journalist; he criss-crossed the Atlantic, knew Sarah Bernhardt and Lily Langtree, and he made lots of money. But he also lost lots of money (his own and others'). The 'Good Times' slipped away, so Cochran gambled, and then loses money touring Russian Ballet and seeks new opportunities abroad. His creditors catch up with him and he is soon declared bankrupt. Ah, the showman's life … up a while, down a while. But he is an engaging writer, with an exciting story to tell!
