About This Item

London: The Society ofAntiquaries of London, distrib by Thames & Hudson, 1978, 1978 HC, DJ, 4to, 136pp,list of plates, 80 plates, some color, most b/w, notes, select bibliog, index. London: Society of Antiquaries, 1978, Distrib by Thames and Hudson. Not many pieces of Medieval French secular silver survive, and the plates in this book comprise a full corpus of all the surviving pieces. Much of the research was done from inventories and other documents, mostly written in Medieval French and Latin. The frontispiece illustrates the titlepage of a manuscript of the inventory of King Charles V which contained a fairly detailed account of 2500 or so pieces of plate. Other inventories of significant collections were of Louis dAnjou dating from about 1366, Jean Duc de Berry, Louis dOrleans and more. Eleven chapters are devoted to the sources of information, the social function of plate, design and style, techniques of decoration, including precious stones, cloisonné, plique a jour enamel, motifs of enameled decorations on plate, goldsmiths in relation to craftsmen, designers and the court, and an entire final chapter on the 15th century. Extremely interesting and scholarly work. F/F. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine.
