About This Item

London: R. Ackermann, 1821. (6), 46 pages, followed by 48 plates printed only on the rectos. The text, though not attributed in the book, is by the British romantic poet William Wordsworth, who continued to revise it for his own travel book, A Guide through the District of the Lakes. The illustrations are 48 soft ground etchings by William Frederick Wells after the watercolors by Wilkinson. Titles of plates in order: 1. Vale of the Lune, Lonsdale looking towards Ingleborough Hill & Hornby Castle. 2. South view of Furness Abby, Lancashire. 3. Penny bridge, between Ulverstone & Coniston, with the tide in. 4. View on Comiston-water. 5. Coniston Water-head. 6. Cottage at Nebthit with Backbarrow-Crag. 7. View on the banks of Coniston-water. 8. Estwaite-water from below Bellemount. 9. View on Winandermere. 10. Newby bridge, foot of Winandermere. 11. Cottages at Ambleside. 12. Langdale Chapel, Vale of Langdale. 13. Elter-Water. 14. Brathay-bridge, near Ambleside. 15. Cottage near Rydal. 16. Dulmail raise, on the Ambleside Road. 17. Thirle-mere or Leathes-water. 18. View on the Ambleside road, near Bridge foot, with part of St. John's Vale. 19. Legbethwaite Mill, St. John's Vale, taken after much rain. 20. View in St. John's Vale, with Green-crag &c. 21. View in St. John's Vale, near Wanthwaite. 22. Derwent-water from Appelthwaite. 23. Part of Skiddaw, from Appelthwaite Gill. 24. Cottages in Appelthwaite looking from Skiddaw. 25-26. Cottages at Braithwaite. 27. Scale, or Skell-gill Farm House, above Portinscale. 28. Stony-croft Bridge, Vale of Newlands. 29. Cottage in the Vale of Newlands near Stare-bridge. 30. Cottage in the Vale of Newlands, with Robinson's-crag. 31. Cottage in the vale of Newlands, between Keswick and Buttermere. 32. View in the Vale of Newlands. 33. View on the Grange-river Borrowdale. 34. View on the Grange-river Borrowdale, looking towards Derwent-water. 35. View near Seatoller, Borrowdale. 36. View above Seatoller. 37. Smelting Mill, near Thornthwaite. 38. Bassenthwaite Lake, from Embleton Vale. 39. Cottages in the Vale of Lorton. 40. Ennerdale Broad-water. 41. Wast-water, looking up to Wast-dale Head. 42. View on the Banks of Wast-water. 43. Stye-head Tarn, with Aron, or Great-End, above Borrowdale. 44. Lyulph's Tower, Ullswater. 45. View near Brothers-water. 46. View on Kirkstone, between Ambleside and Patterdale. 47. Hawes-water. 48. Lanercost Priory, Cumberland. The book was sympathetically rebound 25 years ago by bookbinder and antiquarian bookseller H. L. Wilson. The exterior (a period-appropriate 1/2 gilt-ruled brown calf over marbled paper covered boards) is virtually as-new, with an interior that is in very good condition. Generally clean and tight, with a faint waterstain in the center of the fore-edge of most leaves.. The stain's slight intrsion into the bottom edge of the images is discernible only on the verso of the prints. There is some staining/smudging in margins of text pages, that is more pronounced on several pages. Collated as complete, with the inclusion of an extra leaf repeating the last 2 pages of text. The 1821 date and the accompanying printer information has been effaced--perhaps by an earlier owner who tried to represent the book as a first edition (the plates do carry the 1810 imprint of the 1st ed.).. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Illus. by Joseph Wilkinson and William Frederick Wells. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Book.
