An impressive binding patented during the Civil War, with heavily embossed gilt and black highlighted 17th century style boards, the brown leather with scrolled gilt ivy decorations. Patent label for book cover at front paste down: "Book Cover Patented, July 5th, 1864. October 17th, 1863". Tall 4to, frontispiece, 668pp, [4] pp, 12 leaves of plates. All edges gilt. Each page has an ornamental border printed in blue or red. Plates signed "CNP" and "Parmelee." Rubbed at base of spine, short split along front lower spine at front board. Internally, very good condition, bright and clean. OCLC: 316835585 records 4 copies.

A hefty tome in full brown leather with bevelled edges, decorative gilt borders and spine sections, and design in blind in the center of the front and back covers. All edges gilt, coated yellow endpapers, portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, printed on double-column and with page borders, 100 drawings on wood and 20 drawings in chromo-lithography. The covers are a bit scuffed, the inner hinges cracked, and a handsome gift inscription dated Xmas 1866. The book is solid and internally clean. Contributors include George Cheever, James Montgomery.
