1768 Diderot Encyclopedia Plates HUGE FOLIO Medicine Architecture Vesuvius ArtThe Enlightenment's most-important general encyclopedia!
Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie' changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
This enormous tome is the complete volume of illustrations from the 1768 edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's famous encyclopedia. It features 294 full-page and folding engravings covering a wide variety of topics including human anatomy, surgery and medicine, military and war, art and architecture, zoology, chemistry, and music and theater. New Orleans architecture as it was, is, and should be. A stunning presentation of 19th-century gouache and watercolor archival paintings of New Orleans neighborhoods, this volume presents what old, renovated, restored, and new buildings not only might look like, but how they should look. An educational tool, architectural pattern book, city planner's handbook, and visual treasure, this resource invites its readers to study the footprints of the city's original edifices in order to rebuild and restore with authenticity. Examples of each New Orleans house type, historic plans for each house, and contemporary adaptive-use floor plans are highlighted.
