About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus. FINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn but price-clipped dw/dj.Pictorial colour illustrated dw/dj by Quentin Blake.Lightly bumped and creased to both head and foot of spine/backstrip - shelf-wear(?),orange paper-covered bds with gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain white eps.Fore-edges lightly marked/aged.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus,238pp contains 20 short stories. Greene has himself chosen these 20 stories to make up this collection, and has introduced them with a fascinating biographical sketch of this intensely shy and retiring writer.Between 1896 and 1926 Jacobs produced 12 volumes of short stories, containing in all more than 150 stories and 5 full length novels. for the remaining 17 years of his life, although he had been one of the most successful, and loved, writers of his time he fell completely silent:he never took up his pen again. For several years now not one of his books has been in print. What is lasting in Jacobs' stories and novels is his creation of a world of cheap sailors' lodging houses in the Port of London, the wharves of Wapping, little coastal steamers, small towns in the Thames estuary full of cosy pubs and retired sea captains and,in a different key,the village of Claybury (based on a Suffolk village he used to visit) where the oldest inhabitant sits in The Cauliflower telling tall stories about Bob Pretty, surely one of the great comic characters of English literature, and other ruffians. One of the titles from THE BOW STREET LIBRARY, selected and edited by Greene.
