Provenance: Margaret English (signature and inscription dated 1920) A British nurse's archive of photographs of her service in Macedonia during World War I, inserted as extra-illustrations into a scarce account of the campaign. The author served with the 708 Company Motor Transport attached to the Serbian Army in Macedonia during the War. His scarce work is described as a "lighthearted account with lots of local colour" (Lengel). The present example, however, is much enhanced by the original owner of this copy, Sister Margaret English, a nurse serving at the 37th General Hospital at Salonique in Macedonia during the war. She has covered the endpapers, as well as the verso of the plates and any other available space within the book, with her snapshots from the war. Included are landscapes of the camp, as well as portraits of officers; but most of the photographs comprise vernacular scenes of everyday life in Macedonia during the war. Lengel 909.
