First Edition; Super Royal Folio; pp [ii], 112, 51 full page mostly hand coloured plates, bound in modern cloth with original title label laid down on front board, the volume has three of its plates missing No's 10, 49, & 50, some of the edges of the pages are worn, but the plates themselves are generally clean. Sold as a collection of 47 plates. The most ambitious English anatomy work of its time, the original five parts/volumes were published over a number of years and rarely appear for sale in the complete five parts set, Most sets or part set offered for sale are uncoloured and incomplete, which makes the current single volumes desirable in spite of their imperfections.

London: Taylor and Watson, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. 103 p. 51 cm. 30 engraved plates. Rebacked and recornered in brown leather with original spine label and marbled paper boards. Bookplate on front pastedown for Arthur Bevan. Front hinge repaired internally. Some foxing and dampstains. Most noticeable dampstain is to inner margin of first plate but does not affect the illustration itself. Tear at bottom of plate 4. Irish anatomist Jones Quain (1796 – 1865) became professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of London while co-author Sir Erasmus Wilson (1809-1884) was a well-known surgeon. Superb lithographs by William Fairland, well known for anatomical subjects. The authors, in their plate descriptions, refer to William Cheselden (1688-1752), teacher of anatomy and surgery, who in 1733 published Osteographia or the Anatomy of Bones, the first full and accurate description of the anatomy of the human skeletal system.
