ont> William Mackenzie : London, 1880 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Six beautifully illustrated volumes regarding the various seats of nobles and gentlemen in Britain and Ireland. There are discussions of the various stately homes and estates. A fascinating survey, which looks at many country houses in the Victorian era. The descriptive text is complemented by the detailed plates, which have been produced by Benjamin Fawcett, a noted colour printer of this time. The illustrations are by Alexander Francis Lydon, before being produced using the Baxter method by Fawcett. With 238 plates across all six divisions. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, Isaac Tucker. Undated, dated using Copac. Illustrated, with a title page and thirty-nine plates to division one. With a frontispiece, title page and thirty-seven plates to division two. A title page and thirty eight plates to division three, Frontis, title page and thirty-eight plates to division four, A frontis, title page and thirty-eight plates to division five. With a frontispiece, title Page and thirty-eight plates to division six. Collated, possibly lacking the frontispieces to divisions I and III. Written by Francis Orpen Morris, a paston-naturalist and author of children's literature. This work is the final of many collaborations by Fawcett, Morris and Lydon. Their relationship lasted almost fifty years, and the trio usually created ornithological works. A beautifully illustrated work. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Occasional marks to boards. The front endpaper to divisions I, II and III have been removed. Front hinge to division 6 is slightly strained but firm. Rear hinge to division 5 is strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to divisions I, II and IV, Isaac Tucker. Internally, all volumes are strained in places. Pages 37-38 and plate 'Clifton Hall' to division II are detached but present. As are pages 43-44 and plate 'Leeds Castle' to division II. Pages 41-42 and plate 'Kelham Hall' to division IV are detached but present. 'Apley Park' plate to division VI is loosening. Pages are generally bright, with occasional scattered spots to pages. Plates remain very bright, with only one or two plates suffering the occasional scattered spots. Overall Condition: Very Good.
