Description:
London: Ward and Lock, 158, Fleet Street, 1865. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo; vii, 216pp. In contemporary half leather over green cloth boards (a little rubbed and worn, remnants of early paper label to head of spine), five raised spine bands, gilt lettered leather spine label to second compartment, all page edges marbled, contemporary ink inscription to front blank, early library blind-stamp to first two leaves ('William Todd and Co. Library, Limerick'), light foxing to opening and closing leaves, unobtrusive light paper browning and occasional spots ans stains otherwise internally clean. The title page bears no date but the publisher's address and book's typography place it in the late 1850s to early 1860s. Very good early example of this American novel of the civil war era.
Sermons on the following subjects, viz. Of the universal sense of good and evil. The characters of the righteous and good man compared; or benevolence the noblest branch of social virtue. The perfection of the Christian scheme of benevolence; in answer to the objection from its not having particularly recommended private friendship, and the love of our country. Of the image of God in man; or the excellency of human nature. God not an arbitrary being. Of the abuses of free-thinking. Of Mysteries. Agur's prayer; or the middle condition of life, generally, the most eligible. The mischiefs of slavish complaisance, and cowardice. Rules for the profitable reading the Holy Scriptures. Of Heresy. Of Schism. Of the pleasures of a religious life. by Foster, James (1697-1753, Baptist preacher and academic) - 1733
