About This Item

London: London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, in Pall-Mall, 1760. 1st Edition . Full leather. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Reynolds, Joshua. First Edition. Two volumes, octavo; xi, [24], 176; 238pp. Contemporary uniform calf over five raised spine bands, spine labels missing, gilt volume numbers direct to third compartments, double gilt fillet to board edges, to head and tail of spine and above and below raised spine bands. Bindings lightly worn, volume 1 front hinge split but still firmly attached. Portrait frontispiece torn with minor loss and laid down on front free endpaper of volume 1, opening and closing leaves of each volume stained by turn ins, nineteenth century ownership labels on front pastedowns. A pleasant copy of this first edition published in great haste as Tristram Shandy shot Sterne to European fame in 1760. The subscribers list is a real hall of eighteenth century fame but concludes rather apologetically, "It is hoped that the errors and omissions in the names of the subscribers will be excused, the shortness of the time rendering it impossible to print a complete and correct list."

About Lyppard Books

Lyppard Books was established in Worcester, UK, in 2012, adopting the unusual name from Lyppard Grange, once a farm attached to the monastery of Worcester's ancient cathedral. We maintain a small and select stock of English and Continental antiquarian titles from the dawn of western printing to the 19th century, and aim to offer original, early examples of scarce and sought-after texts.
