Oxford, UK: Oxford ("at the Theatre"). Bound in original full leather. 1737. 1st edition. hb. 8vo, With extensive list of subscribers' names at front and copper engraved printer's device on the title page. . Stephens (1692-1732) was "Sometime Fellow of Exeter College in Oxford and late Vicar of St. Andrew's in Plymouth." This is the first edition, published in two volumes, and containing 35 sermons. Our offering is volume I, only, containing 17 sermons. The printed dedication in volume I (dated Dec. 20, 1736) is from the author's wife, Gertrude Stephens, and refers to her husband's passing. The list of subscribers is extensive, running to 45 pages, indicating that, in his day, Rev. Stephens was very popular indeed. Pagination: pp. [56], 430, [2]. The copper engraving on the title page is of the Sheldonian Theatre. The boards are very scuffed and worn. The hinges, which were cracked, have been neatly repaired by our conservator. Ink inscriptionon rear endpaper (dated 1940), indicating that the book was a gift to a Dr. Cleveland and that two of the subscriber's bear the same name. Contents clean, tight, and bright. Scarce title: relatively few copies in institutional holdings and none currently offered for sale. .

Contemporary calf with gilt-ruled borders on both boards. Old unskilled leather spine replacement. Inscribed on title page "Rowland Eyre" and in another hand "Hassop Chapel"; back free endpaper has "Prayers for our Country" written on both sides, in a hand matching the Rowland Eyre signature. Hassop Chapel was built in 1806 and used until 1838. There have been a number of men named Rowland Eyre who were descendants of the more well-known Rowland Eyre who erected the new Hassop Hall in the 17th century, but determining which of them was the owner of this book is not possible. John Gother, to whom this volume of prayers is attributed, was a 17th-century English convert to Catholicism, and the Eyre family were staunch English Catholics who probably knew Gother, as he served as chaplain at nearby Warkworth for a time.…
