About This Item
(Seattle): Iwao Matsushita, 1969. First edition. Small octavo. 116 pp. Publisher's printed wrappers with original glassine. A fine copy.Iwao Matsushita (1875-1979) was one of the founders of the Seattle Camera Club, a survivor of Internment Camps during WWII (Missoula and Minidoka) and a professor and librarian at the University of Washington. A lifelong Christian, Matsushita edited a mimeographed religious newspaper (Nanuka no Tabiji - A Seven-Day Journey) from 1954-1969. This book, presumably, is an anthology of that publication. No examples in OCLC. He was the principal/founder of Seattle’s Nihon Gakuin (Japanese Language School) for 18 years. Prior to becoming a citizen in 1954 Iwao taught naturalization classes for two years at Seattle’s Edison Technical School. He was passionate about about Niseis and Sanseis retaining their Japanese and worked diligently towards that end. He graduated with a BA in Far Eastern Studies and worked for the University of Washington as a subject specialist in the Far Eastern Library in Seattle. He retired from the UW at the age of 70 in 1962. It was while working at the UW that he opened the Nihon Gakuin.
