London Circa 1655: Robert Walton At The Globe And Compass, 1655. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Very Good. Original Engraving. Pride: A Well-Dressed Lady With A Fan, Her Hand To Her Forehead. Lettered With Titles Beneath Image, And Four Lines Of Verse. With Producer Names 'G.Glov. Inve. Fecit. Are To Be Sould At The Globe And Compass In St. Paul's Churchyard By Ro: Walton'. Trimmed Closely. Another Printing Of This Engraving Was Sold By William Webb And Annotated Thusly At Bottom. One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. George Glover (Active 1625-1650) Was An English Engraver, Working In The Reign Of Charles I. He Mainly Worked For London Publishers, Including Robert Peake, Thomas Banks, John Hinde And Peter Stent The Publisher Robert Walton (1618 - 1688) Sold At The Globe And Compass (Aka Compasses) In St Paul's Churchyard Circa 1648-66. He Was A Printseller And Publisher; One Of The Major Figures Of His Day, And The Only One Who Has A Pronounced Personality Which Comes Across In The Vitriolic Campaign He Waged Against John Overton In Print. Unlike Stent, He Hardly Ever Seems To Have Reprinted Others' Plates. He Mainly Dealt In Engravings, Often Of Emblematic Character. His Own Ones Are Usually Of Mediocre Quality, And Are Usually Of Subjects Rather Than Portraits.
