Original-issue rare second-state dust jacket has the publisher's $5.00 price on the front flap and the text on the rear panel beginning underneath the illustration of Lawrence. (The first-state has a blank rear panel with the $5.00 price on the front flap, while the much more common third-state has the text beginning indented at the right side of Lawrence's face. Book of the Month Club also released an edition in 1935 in the same format and jackets without prices might be BOMC.) Tan cloth binding with gilt lettering and design on front cover and spine. Dark-brown top edge. Heavy, large, quarto-size book. 672 pages. Illustrated with full-page b/w illustrations and maps throughout. FINE book in VERY GOOD + dust jacket. Book is bright, clean and unworn, tight and square, with strong, sound hinges with no cracking. No sunning and the top edge remains unfaded, spotless and a deep brown hue. Interior is practically flawless with only slight toning to the pages and endpapers and pages appearing possibly unread. No previous owner's signature or bookplate. Dust jacket has a moderately sun-toned spine with a slightly chipped top edge, a 3" reverse L-shaped closed tear at the top edge of the front spine fold ending at the center of the spine panel with no effect to the lettering, a small open tear near the center of the spine with no effect to the lettering, and a few tiny tears to the top edges. Otherwise bright, clean and unworn with no creases or stains. Jacket is protected in a mylar cover..
