About This Item

8vo, pp. 24; with six plates, two with facing printed descriptions, and wood-engraved illustrations; last page slightly browned; in modern wrappers.

Blake alludes to the recent death from diphtheria of Princess Alice, the second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as something of a stimulus for his publication.

He summarises in his introduction that the 'objects of this little work are twofold: First, to teach that many diseases, which we are in the way of looking upon as unavoidable, are really quite the reverse. Second, to show how we may defeat and destroy those twin demons - ignorance and indolence - deadliest enemies of our race.'

Blake was still promulgating the miasma theory as the main cause of illness and describes the various defects in buildings and sewers contributing to disease. The suggestive illustrations showing that ill considered design in domestic sewers allowing noxious gases to pervade the home. OCLC records copies in North America at Yale, Penn State, College of Physicians of Philadelphia, National library of Medicine, Cornell, Johns Hopkins and the Hagley Museum.
