About This Item
Paris: Petrum Santandreanum, 1575. First Edition. 3/4 Leather. Very Good. Bound in 3/4 black modern calf in antique style (leather over marbled boards, 4 raised bands to spine) very slight wear to leather and boards. Internally there are a few light dampstains, one small wormhole that affects no text but generally clean, unmarked and complete. [2pp] title page [26pp] 305pp [24] title page 200pp [24] 76pp [2]. 3 volumes in 1 - the last book is annotations for Sextus Pompei dated 1574. An epitome of Marcus Verrius Flaccus (noted grammarian and instructor to Augustus Caesar's grandsons) by Sextis Pompei Festi that provides uniquely valuable information on the language of Ancient Rome. Existing only in a fragmentary manuscript the Codex Farnesianus in Naples rediscovered during the Renaissance, this edition is Scaliger's attempt to gloss and piece together all available information. "Scaliger's restorations of glosses in the manuscript stand as one of the first examples of modern scholarship" Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
