The Shack is a novel by Canadian author William P. Young, a former office manager and hotel night clerk, published in 2007. The novel was self-published but became a USA Today bestseller, having sold 1 million copies as of June 8, 2008. It was the #1 Paperback trade fiction seller on the New York Times best sellers list from June 2008 to early 2010. Young originally wrote The Shack as a Christmas gift for his six children with no apparent intention of publishing it.

"As I sat in the intensive care waiting area at the local hospital after my oldest son had a terrible auto accident I was given this book. The lady that had given it to me had watched me for days as I sat and prayed for my son to be ok. She approached me with this book and said I would love to give you something. So me being a Christian I accepted and graciously said thank you. As I sat and read the book over the next 2 days of going in and out of his room and praying it touched me so. So much that the next visit I had with my son I read him some and every time I would go to his room I would read more and finally he opened his eyes and said thanks momma all I could here was you reading just like you did when I was little. That garden you read to me about is so beautiful. I cherish the book so much that people have asked me to let them read this book so I went and bought another copy just for people to read because this one means so much to me I will not let it out of my hands. I am getting ready to read Cross Roads by him ."
