About This Item

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1902. Limited Edition. Folio. Number 614 of only 1,000 copies signed by Lee, with the original subscriber's list. A photographic production facsimile from the original. When Sidney Lee was looking for a fine example on which to make his projected facsimile edition, he found that the Chatsworth copy was the cleanest and freshest available in England. The order of the plays is fascinating in all surviving copies. As lee notes on p. xxv: It is doubtful if any folio volume of the day betrayed greater want of coherence or of satisfactory method in the character or arrangement of the preliminary leaves. In 1914 the Duke of Devonshire copy was sold to Henry Huntington. Bound in reversed calf raised bands, double morocco spine labels gilt, Joints and hinges have at some point been repaired, not professionally but does hold well, lower marginal damp stain to last few leaves, wear through to corners and edges, from the library of Charles Loughridge, an author who had written several books including books of Shakespeare and Francis Bacon. A scarce work.
