AUTOGRAPHED EDITION - signed by the author on an attractive custom made book plate on front free end paper, signature only. . ----------------------------------------------------- It is 1820. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Sharpe, a peaceful farmer since Waterloo, comes out of retirement to undertake a perilous mission. He must find Don Blas Vivar, Captain-General of the Spanish colony of Chile and an old friend, who vanished without a trace half a world away. Accompanied by comrade Patrick Harper, Sharpe sets sail for Chile. On the way, they stop at Saint Helena to pay a courtesy call on Napoleon. The exiled emperor persuades Sharpe to carry a gift to an admirer in Chile, a seemingly innocent errand. But once in Chile events turn ominous as Sharpe and Harper try in vain to locate Vivar. The country is wracked by an insurgency led by the charismatic Lord Cochrane, said to be the devil himself; and Sharpe and Harper quickly fall under the suspicion of Vivar's venal successor, Captain-General Bautista. Suspicion turns to enmity when Napoleon's "gift" proves to conceal a coded message, and Bautista accuses the men of conspiring with the former scourge of Europe. Enemies and allies change colors as Sharpe and Harper go to war once again. On land and sea they fight, not only to find Vivar, but also to survive in a land where treachery rules, injustice abounds, and Napoleon lurks on the horizon, itching to set the world ablaze again.
