Bowman and Irwin's description of Sherman's character and his military career shed light on his strategic innovation. Sherman's approach to command and strategy would have him later declared by British historian, B.H. Liddell Hart as "…the first modern general." This work portrays Gen. Sherman's military exploits in great detail expertly conveying the exceptional, yet polarizing strategies Sherman employed against the Confederate army while also showcasing the respect his soldiers had for him under his command.
