Black cloth, green lettering, 4 line author inscription on fep, foxing inside front/back cover, 1/2" white spot top of spine, G+, Dust jacket has 1 1/2" x 3" piece missing tope of spine and front thus cutting off the letters in the word "the" and the "S" in shield in title, also missing 1/2" x 1" piece lower bottom of spine .

First edition (first printing) with Scribners' A on copyright page, but in the later jacket - Derleth bought remaindered titles from Scribner and warehoused them, printing new jackets for a couple of titles in, probably, the 1960s. Hardcover, full black cloth, green titling, gilt stripes. Light wear to book, minor stains; jacket lightly rubbed with a black mark at the base of the spine. Text clean; [8], 511 pages..
