A genuine and VERY RARE single volume first edition of the second book in Forester's famed Hornblower series published in April 1938, well before the bundled volume: Ship of the Line/Flying Colours.
The front title page of the dust jacket has been cut and glued onto the inside (page 2) of the hardcover. Binding is tight, slightly slanted, with cream-coloured inside binding pages. Very clean, slightly tanned pages with light foxing to textblock exteriors. Two light pencil-marked annotations on pages 75 and 239. Unattached giftcard inserted dated Dec. 1938.
