SOUTH AFRICA,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn. [Author is the Shipping Editor of the 'Cape Times'.] NFINE/VG.No owner inscrptn, but author's neat, blue ink handwritten dedication, signature and date: ' - a few moments of nostalgia - Geo Young 7. 9. 80' to title page and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price. Bright, ships' colour illustrations and photographs montage'd dw/dj panels with rubbing, chipping with miniscule loss, and creasing to edges and corners and head+foot of spine/backstrip.Internally to front fold and spine's gutter's front edge with brown adhesive tape repair/strengthening to dw/dj.Top+fore-edges ubiquitously aged/toned; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog- ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp, generally clean,sharp-cornered,original plain pale blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked black ink printed letters to spine/backstrip and clean plain white endpapers.South Africa, slim Qrto HB +dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn,9-161pp [paginated] includes illustrations list/table,a foreword,VIII (8) chapters, profuse contemporary b/w photographs throughout the text and the book,an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title with b/w scenic photographic frntis to its verso, author SIGNED title page,a dedication, contents list/table and 2pp blanks at the rear of the book.
Author's first book 'Salt in my Blood',1975,enumerated some events of his 40 years as a dockfront reporter. This volume could well be regarded as a sequel and whereas the first volume dealt with the writer's experiences, this has more to say about the famous ships that have come and gone on the Cape route, the consequences of change, and the problems of the shipping industry.Just as the first book found its way into the libraries of historians, shipowners and mariners, there is much information within these pages which has not been so exhaustively dealt with before and could prove to be Africana. Although the author has now been associated with the shipping and dock industry for more than 43 years,he is not retired. Indeed,he still makes a daily sortie to the wharves and edits a daily feature in a newspaper. He adds more pictures of ships to his already formidable library (a real reservoir of experience and maritime records,) some of which excite ordinary interest when reproduced in the daily newspaper.
Kommetjie (Afrikaans for "small basin," approximately pronounced cawma-key) is a small town near Cape Town,in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It lies about halfway down the west coast of the Cape Peninsula, at the southern end of the long wide beach that runs northwards towards Chapman's Peak and Noordhoek.
