Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1912. Second Edition. Hardcover. VG-, clean and tight but with general shelf wear to covers (mostly rubbing to head/tail of spine, corners, and front hinge). Gilt bright.. Maroon cloth/boards; gilt lettering. xvi + 515 pp.; bw frontis and 63 additional bw illus. "From log books, sea journals and other manuscripts hitherto unpublished, most of them written during the years between the Revolution and the War of 1812, are herein gathered such narratives as those of the first American voyages to Japan, Arabia and the South Seas. These and other records, as written by seamen who made Salem the most famous port of the New World a century ago [now two centuries ago!], ar much more than local annals. They comprise a unique and brillian chapter of American history and speak for themselves." - from the preface which also mentions the revived interest in the American merchant marine, because of the Panama Canal (which opened only in 1914), even though, "after digging a ditch between two oceans at a cost of hundres of millions, there are almost no American ships to use it." A immensely interesting book!
